You will also have to provide special organic food meant for filter feeders, because oysters have specific dietary needs. Generic food meant for saltwater inhabitants will not work here. You will have to feed each oyster is individually, and it will be a time consuming process. You will have to occasionally provide nutritional supplements in the form of phytoplankton, a microscopic portion of plankton that drift through the water.
Statistics suggest that certain species of oysters have a better chance of survival in captivity. If you have just embarked on maintaining saltwater aquariums, then you should get these breeds first up.
